Brooks Rehabilitation Challenge Mile / Gate River Run (2018)
This past weekend I was able to participate in a few Jacksonville gems. I was able to run the Gate River Run and help participate in the Brooks Challenge Mile. There were about 24,000 runners at the Gate River Run and the Brooks Challenge Mile had a great turnout. There were many past patients I had seen in the clinic who participate and enjoy life.
The Brooks Rehabilitation Challenge Mile was hosted and coordinated by the Brooks Adaptive Sports program. They really go above and beyond when planning these events. They get busses to go around and pick up the patient, wheelchairs, and their families to be able to attend the race. They also organized the entire race with the Gate River Run to be able to use some of the same street closures and make the patients feel like they are part of the community and not a separate race or entity. Seeing the patients’ race parts of the same course the Gate run goes through helps include the participants in this huge community, especially at the after-party with everyone walking around with medals.
